Planning & Management of Flood Diaster in District Layyah

Purpose of Awareness Program

RWO arranged an awareness program with the support of SPO, Multan on 23-07-2012 at Government Postgraduate College, Layyah. 40 male participants from the flood affected areas and some well known personalities of layyah attended this session. The purpose of this activity was to aware the people about the precautionary measures, remedial and relief actions that they need to plan for facing the aftermath of rains and action of river in flood. Strenuous efforts were made to mobilize all participants for the awareness of prevention of disastrous situations and carry out relief activities in systematic manners. To achieve this goal detailed plans were shared with the participants.

The governing objectives of this program are outlined below:

  • To get the knowledge about the maximum utilization of all available resources and means to overcome the flood destructions.
  • To know about the safety measures for life, property, livestock, irrigation works and tube wells etc.
  • To share the guidelines about the pre-emptive and control operations.
  • To be familiar with the role of the District Authorities, Government Agencies and Private Organizations in any emergency in order to ensure prompt action through mutual cooperation.

Flood in District Layyah

Layyah district is situated on the east bank of river Indus and faces the disaster of flood occasionally during the peak flood season. Usual patterns of life are abruptly disrupted and large number of people plunged into helplessness and sufferings. In the year of 2010 high intensity and magnitude of water in river Indus and a lot spell of rains caused the record flood of century. In Layyah district 15 union councils spreading on more than 400,000 acres were struck by severe flood. Flood water engulfed the houses render the people shelter less, damaging their properties and losses of livestock. The flood waters washed away thousands of acres of crops, government buildings, businesses, schools, bridges, railway tracks and homes. After this, it started engulfing the land swiftly, posing a serious threat to localities of people. According to agriculture officials, floods have washed away standing crops on more than 250,000 acres, trees, food reserves, vegetables, fruits and grassy areas. Communication network, access to mobility and power supply stayed out of order. At least 1,100 people died in the Monsoon floods and a million affected with having shelter on rooftops, trees and electricity poles.
